Welcome to Yahweh Yoga!

Graduate Story: Kim Dumas

Why did you decide to become a Christian Yoga Teacher?

I became a Christian yoga teacher basically because I felt absolutely called to! It is not in my nature to be in front of people so for me to have this overwhelming desire- I know it has to be from God. I have found so much peace in my own practice. I have drawn closer to God on my mat than anywhere else. I have learned so many lessons about myself and how I approach life by simply coming to my mat again and again and again. I want more than anything to share this gift with others. I want to give people a tool that they can use to help them draw closer to God.

What has practicing Christian Yoga meant to your relationship with God?

Actually I thought I discovered Christian yoga 🙂 I have been practicing for over 15 years and as I grew in my practice, I noticed that I was drawing closer to God. I found myself worshiping him as I moved through the poses of my practice. I began to practice to Christen music when I practiced at home and this made the connection even stronger. I was sitting in Starbucks one day and picked up a Yoga Journal magazine and saw an ad for Yahweh yoga- I was blown away that there was someone else out there who shared this understanding of Christian yoga. I knew then that I would someday attend the teacher training at Yahweh and become a Christian yoga teacher.

What benefits do you receive by practicing Christian Yoga?

The benefits I receive from practicing Christian yoga are:

  • A deeper connection with God and His spirit in me
  • Experiencing a “peace that passes understanding”
  • A greater grasp of the mind/body connection
  • A greater sense of patience and grace
  • A sense of perspective- I come to my mat worried, stressed or anxious and I leave my mat knowing God is in control and all things work to my good (Romans 8:28)

How has Christian yoga helped your health?

I am almost 45 years old and I am in the best shape of my life! Yoga is the only exercise I do other than walking. My muscle tone is better now than when I was 30. I am strong and that makes me feel confident and secure. My education at Yahweh Yoga has helped me become more aware of the connection about food choices and how they affect my health. We truly are what we eat. I eat healthier now that ever before and I feel great!

How has Christian yoga helped your personality “off the mat”?

I am more compassionate than I used to be. Christian Yoga has helped me understand that we are all at different places in our journey. I find that I am more accepting and less judgmental. More patient or at least more aware of when I am not being patient. I feel an overriding sense of peace- a deeper understanding that God is in control and everything is in His hands.

What made you choose to travel so far to study at Yahweh Yoga?

Good question! I rarely leave my family for even a weekend so to make the trip across the country and be away from my family for 2 WEEKS was a real stretch for me! I was so impressed by the professionalism and integrity of the Yahweh yoga program. I was also excited to be able to receive my RYT. I love the fact that Yahweh yoga is continually growing and evolving -not resting on their laurels. They strive to do everything with excellence and it shows. I was also impressed by the gentle strength, compassion and sense of humor I saw in Deanna and Courtney.

What was your favorite part the Yahweh Yoga Teacher Training Experience?

The sense of love and support I felt and shared with all my fellow students during training was definitely my favorite part of the teacher training experience. I also enjoyed experiencing new foods. As much as I was anxious about my final teach- I actually enjoyed it.

How long was it before you began teaching after your training?

I started securing a place to hold classes as soon as I returned from training. I was teaching a regular weekly class in less than a month after I retuned home. I am currently teaching 3 classes a week and will add a 4th at the end of June. I have my own website www.threeinoneyoga.com and just had a great article written about my classes in our local paper.

What does teaching Christian yoga mean to you?

It is an honor and a privilege to help bring someone closer to God. So many of my students come to yoga class initially because they want to get in shape, lose weight, become more flexible etc. but after experiencing Christian yoga they comment on how much peace they feel- I think (and hope) that is what keeps them coming back. For me, teaching Christian Yoga is not about ME, it’s not even about being a great teacher- it’s about helping people learn how to draw near to God and empowering them to grow stronger mentally, physically and spiritually. That’s why I chose the name Three in One Yoga -Uniting Body, Mind and Spirit.

What do you hope people feel when they experience one of your classes?

It is my hope and prayer that people walk away from class with a sense of peace and calm. My classes are physically challenging- so I hope they get a good work out and that they listen to their bodies and don’t push too hard. But most of all, I hope people experience God- that they get a glimpse or a taste of His presence.

Anything else you would like to share?

I attended the training with my 72-year-old mother (pictured with me above) and she loved it and is also teaching less challenging classes, which she loves. Since learning about raw food nutrition and returning home she has lost 25 pounds and is in great health! We had such a great bonding time together and will always treasure taking this education together; it was an experience of a lifetime!

I am so grateful to Yahweh Yoga! Thank you for all your hard work! You are touching countless lives through all the people that come through the Yahweh Yoga teacher training and then go back into their communities and share the gift of Christian Yoga!
