Last summer, when newly graduated Yahweh Yoga teacher Ashley Getz needed a place to teach her yoga classes, Grosse Pointe, Michigan resident Melissa Gray volunteered the basement of her home. By autumn of that year, Melissa knew that God was calling her to teach yoga, too.

“I had been praying about becoming certified and then God put it in my heart to invite my friend Marna Getz to join me as well,” Melissa says. Marna happens to be the mother of Ashley Getz, the woman who brought Christian Yoga to the community initially.

Turns out, Marna was as excited to learn to teach Christian Yoga as Melissa was. The enthusiasm Melissa and Marna felt was contagious and soon they planted the seed with friend Yonson Compton, and Marna’s other two daughters, Heidi and Bronwyn.

All five women graduated from the Yahweh Yoga teacher training program in June, 2009, and already have an active yoga teaching averaging 15-20 students per class.

Classes are still held in Melissa’s basement, although plans are in the works to move to a larger space to accommodate more students.

Benefits of Bringing a Friend

One of the nicest parts of having friends learn Christian Yoga teacher training with you is the support you can offer each other once you start teaching classes. DeAnna Smothers, Co-Founder of Yahweh Yoga explains:

“Wonderful things happen when a group of faithful, intelligent Christian yogi get together to bring the gift of Christian yoga to a community,” she says. “Plus, it is important to have someone who can teach your classes for you: life happens and many times we need a sub to teach our classes that is very well received by our students. Yoga teachers should be highly trained, skilled and truly loving and peaceful within in order to resonate with their students, we focus on these things in our trainings. When teachers in a given area are trained by the same school, everyone’s on the same page and it makes for clear and peaceful communication.”

Make new friends too

You may begin your teacher training already knowing one person, but you will finish with a whole class of new friends. “I totally branched out during teacher training,” says Melissa. “I met amazing people.” The Yahweh Yoga curriculum has been designed to nurture student fellowship in addition to enhancing yoga skills and knowledge.
